GRALLERT, WALTER WILLIAM. Age 79, of Westford, Massachusetts and Cherryfield, Maine died November 27th 2009 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Born August 23rd, 1930 in Union City, New Jersey he was the beloved husband of Margot A.(Graham) and son of Wilhelm H. and Flora A. (Stierand). He was raised in the Borough of Brooklyn, New York and Jersey City, New Jersey. His first job was a pinsetter in a bowling alley but, as a child, he and his cousin Werner would peddle cull potatoes door to door in Brooklyn. In 1949, he graduated from W. L. Dickinson High School in Jersey City where he played baseball and where he was thought of as the “Snappiest Dresser” in his class. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1951 and served in North Africa, Korea and the South Pacific in the Construction Battalion (CB’s) during the Korean conflict and was honorably discharged in 1955. He studied architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design where he matriculated in 1960. He retired from Jung/Brannen Architects and Planners in Boston where, among many other projects, he oversaw the design and renovation of the historic Salem Courthouse, the Mount Auburn Hospital and the design and construction of the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a longstanding Democrat and a lifelong Catholic and was a parishoner at Saint Paul Parish in Cambridge. An ardent outdoorsman and environmentalist, he was a fly fisherman- building his own fly rods and tying his own flies. An avid sports fan, particularly of baseball, he was a inveterate fan of the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers. A voracious reader, he enjoyed reading history and theology as well as reading and writing poetry. He supported many charities, public broadcasting and numerous environmental causes. He is survived by his wife, three sons; Matthew J. and wife Amy of Cummington, MA; Graham W. and wife Anne of Ayer, MA; Christopher P. and wife Katiela of Tampa, FL; two daughters; Della A. of Watertown, MA and Sarah E. and husband Edward of Carlisle, MA and six grandchildren. A funeral mass will be held at Saint Paul Parish Church in Cambridge on Saturday, November 5th at 10:00 AM followed by a reception at St Paul’s Di Giovanni Hall. In Lieu of flowers the family asks that expressions of sympathy are made to the Maine Chapter of the Nature Conservancy or the Downeast Coastal Conservancy.
