Coleen Mixon Mathis, 87, of Ocilla, died Friday, November 27, at Dorminy Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held 2 P.M., Monday, November 30 at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Ocilla. Interment will follow in the Brushy Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 12:00 until the funeral hour at the funeral home.
Mrs. Mathis was born May 26, 1922 in Irwin County to the late Warren R. and Martha Sutton Mixon. She had attended ABAC and was a graduate of the University of Georgia. She was a retired teacher after more than 30 years, having taught eighth grade English for over 20 years. Mrs. Mathis was a former member of the Ocilla United Methodist Church, a Sunday school teacher and director of the children’s choir. Mrs. Mathis lived in Perry for a short time and joined the Perry United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her children, Johnny (Linda) Mathis of Ocilla and Martha Ann (Foster) Rhodes of Perry, GA; brother, Harry (Lila) Mixon of Ocilla and sister, Warrena Matthews of Cordele; 4 grandchildren: Matt Mathis, Marcy and Brant Lane, Mindy and Greg Harof, Amy and Andy Crook, and 5 great grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David "Dave" B. Mathis and a sister, Virginia Claire Mixon Hurt.
