Bernard W. Barrows, 87, of Plymouth, formerly of Whitman died Friday November 27th in the Jordan Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of 62 years to Jane (Sweeney) Barrows. He was the son of the late Raymond and Alice Barrows.
He was born in Orange, MA, before moving to Whitman and then to Abington as a boy. He graduated from Abington high School class of 1941.
He served in the Merchant Marines, and at the out break of WWII. He was called up by the United States Navy, where he was a machinist on destroyer’s escorts from 1942 and 1946
Bernard was a captain of the undefeated Abington High School football team in 1940 and later played for the Abington Old Towne Football Team for a decade.
He worked as a sheet metal worker at the Fore River Shipyard and later was an instructor .Bernard was very active in his community, serving as a Cub Scout Leader for many years and as a member of the Whitman Housing Committee, Conservation Commission and the Democratic Town Committee. He was a longtime parishioner of the Holy Ghost Church, and served on the parish council. He was also a member of the Abington VFW and worked as a volunteer at the Easton YMCA with the disable.
Bernard along with his wife, Jane, enjoyed traveling, taking trips to Hawaii, Ireland, England, France and Germany, as well as a cross country trip in 1993.
In addition to his wife Jane ,he is survived loved and missed by his children, Peter, Mary, David, Maureen, Steven; also 6 grandchildren and 8 great children. He was also the brother of the late, Harry and Leonard Barrows.
His services will be held on Tuesday, December 1st at 9:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman, followed by a 10:00 AM funeral mass in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. Burial will follow in the St James Cemetery, Whitman, MA.
