Joseph “Joe” C. Carpender 84, of East Taunton formerly of Brockton and Lantana, FL died Thursday November 19, 2009 at the Golden Living Center–Wedgemere in Taunton after a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of the late Mary L. (Millay) Carpender. Joe was born and raised in Carteret, NJ and served in the US Navy during WW II in the European-African-Middle East Theatre. Following his military discharge he moved to Brockton where he married and started his family.
In 1985 Joe retired from the Brockton Post Office after many years as a letter carrier. In his retirement he moved to Lantana, FL and returned to the local area 4 years ago to make his home near his children and grandchildren.
Joe loved bowling, playing cards and working in his yard. He had been a member of the Brockton Seniors Center and bowled with in senior league. Joe treasured his time spent with his family including his 8 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. He will be lovingly remembered as a kind and gentle man.
He was the loving father of Carol A. Fitting of Taunton; Diana L. Holbrook of Brockton; David C. Carpender of New Bedford; Marianne Carpender of Taunton; Bonnie Parker of Middleboro and the late Joseph F. Carpender. He was the brother of John Merelo of Orlando, FL.
Funeral Service in the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont St. (Rte 123) Brockton Tuesday at 10 am. Burial in Pine Hill Cemetery. Visiting hours Monday 4-8 pm.
