Obituary

Warren Douglas McKay, 84, passed away on November 19th after an extended illness. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy (Carter) McKay; his three children, Bruce and his wife, Suzanne, of Mystic, Andrew and his wife, Nancy, of Mystic, Barbara Whitehouse and her husband, Paul, of Niantic; and his five grandchildren, Kimberly McKay, Michael McKay, Drew McKay, Sean McKay, and Amy Whitehouse.

Doug will be sadly missed by his sister, Helen M. Johnson of Roanoke, Virginia.

Doug was born on January 4, 1925 in Rochester, N.Y. He graduated from New Rochelle High School in New Rochelle, N.Y. and Kimball Union Academy in Meriden N.H. before he served in WWII. He was in the 697th Field Artillery Battalion with the 5th Army in Italy, and with the 7th Army in France and Germany from 1943 to 1945.

Mr. McKay graduated from Dartmouth College in 1949. He was a longtime resident of Mystic and was employed by the Mystic Seaport as an Assistant Curator from 1949 to 1955, and by Electric Boat as a Design Department Supervisor from 1955 until his retirement in 1977.

After his retirement, Doug enjoyed his home, gardening and backyard wildlife in Mystic, as well as several trips to Scotland and England. He was an avid follower of the N.Y. Yankees, N.Y. Giants, and the UCONN Huskies men and women basketball teams. He was a member of the Mystic Seaport and the Mason’s Island Yacht Club.

A private burial service at Elm Grove Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
