Matthew J. Staniewicz, 90 years old, husband of the late Mary C. (Rajchel) Staniewicz who died in 1972, died Thursday at the Manchester N H Veterans Administration Center.
Born in Lowell on July 4, 1919, he was a son of the late William Staniewicz and Agatha (Adamowski)(Staniewicz) Olzewski. Having lived in Lowell for most of his life except for a brief time in his childhood when he lived in Cambridge, he received his education in the Lowell schools.
Mr. Staniewicz was a proud twenty year veteran in the United States Army. He served during World War II under General George Patton in the Third Army 790th Field Artillery Battalion. For many years, he was employed as a millworker at the Southwell Combing Co. in North Chelmsford. Mr. Staniewicz was a member of the Polish American Veterans, the National Rifle Association, the Centraville Sportsman’s Club in Dracut and a former member of the Lowell Lodge of Elks # 87. In his spare time, Mr. Staniewicz did much research and held interest in World War II history. He attended the Immaculate Conception Church.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Lou and her husband Richard T. Looney of Lowell; two grandchildren, Daniel M. and Catherine M. Looney of Lowell; a brother, Walter J. Stanwyck of Louden, NH and several nieces , nephews and cousins.
He was also the brother of the late Emile J. Staniewicz who died in 1978.
STANIEWICZ- His Funeral will be held Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 8 AM from the MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 187 NESMITH ST, (Rte.38). His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 AM at the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery, Newmarket, NH. at 11:45 am. Arrangements are by the MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, LOWELL.
