Gladys Barnes Gibbs, 88, of Fitzgerald, died Friday, November 13, 2009, at Tift Health care in Tifton.
Graveside services will be held 11 A.M., Monday, November 16, 2009 at Evergreen Cemetery with Dr. Ches Smith officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before services at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Mrs. Gibbs was born August 16, 1921 in Ben Hill County to the late George and Sarah Garrison Barnes. She lived in Fitzgerald for the past forty years and graduated from Macon Business College. Mrs. Gibbs was a homemaker, a former bookkeeper for Scott’s Flower Shop and during World War II she worked at Moody Field. She was a member of Antioch Methodist Church in Adel, where she was organist for over 50 years. Mrs. Gibbs was a former Lions Club Sweetheart and pianist.
Mrs. Gibbs survived by a niece and nephews, Latrelle & Dr. Sammie Dixon of Tifton, Ronnie Barnes Ryckman of Melbourne, FL and sister-in-law, Emily Barnes of Melbourne, FL as well as several great nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, James C. Whitehurst and J. Carroll Gibbs, 2 sisters and a brother.
