Chester Gordon Legenc, 88, died November 12, 2009 at Bedford Hills Health care following a long illness.
He was born in Manchester on June 27, 1921 the son of Marcin and Mary (Bara) Legenc and had resided in Manchester for all of his life.
He graduated from Manchester Central High School class of 1940.
Prior to World War II, he enlisted with the National Guard’s 172nd field Artillery. During WWII he entered the U.S. Army in 1941 and served as a member of Patton’s Third Army, 94th Infantry Division as a heavy machine gunner. As a member of “Patton’s Golden Nuggets”, he fought during the 281 days of combat in the European Theatre Campaign.
After his military service, he returned to Manchester and worked for the state of NH Highway Department. He was then a custodian at Manchester Memorial High School for many years. After retiring, he enjoyed traveling, reading, WWII military history, and tending to his garden. He was a member of Holy Trinity Polish National Cathedral.
Family members include, a sister, Isabel M. Card of Bedford; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service was held in the Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm Street, corner of North Street, on Saturday, Novmber 21, 2009. Bishop Thomas Gnat officiated. Burial with military honors followed at Holy Trinity Polish National Cemetery in Goffstown.
