John F. Mason, 57 years, of Brockton died Thursday November 12, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of 29 years of Margaret “Peg” (Gately) Mason and devoted father of Joseph and Michael Mason. Born and raised in Brockton, son of the late Robert E. and Ruth F. (Barnes) Mason, John had been a lifelong resident. He attended St. Patrick’s Grammar School, graduated from Brockton High School in 1970 and attended Wentworth Institute. John worked for John Hancock Insurance Company for several years and, until his illness, had been employed by Bay State Gas Company for the last 20 years. He was a member of the Utility Workers of America, Local 273.
John was active in youth baseball and soccer and was instrumental in organizing junior golf at DW Field Golf Course. He was an avid golfer and loved to camp in Truro with family and friends. Fishing with his son Joe and teaching Michael to play golf were two of his favorite pastimes.
He is also survived by a sister Kathleen Hurrie of Roslindale and two brothers Robert Mason of Roslindale and David Mason of Mansfield and his faithful companion Gracie. He also leaves his godmother Maureen Fenton and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Monday at 8am. Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 9am. Burial in South Easton Cemetery.
