Louise A. (Gomes Monteiro) Ramos, 81, of New Bedford died Friday November 7, 2009 suddenly at home. She was the wife of the late Joseph M. "Jiggs" Ramos.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late August and Julia (Monteiro) Gomes, she lived in New Bedford for most of her life.
She was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Mrs. Ramos was formerly employed as a teacher's aide at the Gomes Elementary School until her retirement. She later was a medical dispatcher for the Council on Aging. She had previously worked as a salesperson at the Star Store.
She was a member of the St. Martin de Porres Guild, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Our Lady of the Assumption Senior Citizens, the Turtles Travel Club, the Cape Verdean-American Veterans Auxiliary, and the New Cape Verdean Band Club.
She is survived by her son, Keith A. Francis of Mitchellville, MD; four stepchildren, Adele, Kenneth, Jaime, and Mary Lyn Ramos, all of New Bedford; a sister, Mary Ann Spinola of Onset; five brothers, August, Joseph, Raymond, Donald, and Paul Gomes, all of New Bedford; six grandchildren. Kenneth Francis of New York City, Karly Francis of Largo, MD, Kellen Francis of Richmond, VA, Kendra Francis of New Bedford, Nichelle Santos of Chicago, and Tiara Francis of Washington, D.C.; five great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late Kenneth A. Francis, stepmother of the late Lois P. Ramos, and sister of the late Catherine Texeira, Arthur Monteiro, David Gomes, and Anthony J. Gomes.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 9 AM at Our Lady of the Assumption Church. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery.
