Murphy H. Stokes, 86, of Fitzgerald, died Monday, November 2, 2009 at Dorminy Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held 2 P.M. Thursday, November 5, at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ronnie Youngblood officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Wednesday evening at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Mr. Stokes was born July 8, 1923 in Ben Hill County to the late Murphy D. and Annie Laura Irwin Stokes. He lived in Fitzgerald most all of his life and was a former resident of Macon. Mr. Stokes retired from the sheet metal department at Robins Air Force Base and was a former employee of J & J Video Store in Fitzgerald. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Chris & Sherry Stokes of Fitzgerald; granddaughter, Christa Stokes of Fitzgerald; brother and sister-in-law, Johnny & Jan Stokes of Fitzgerald; sisters and brother-in-law, Mollie & Gene Daniels of Ocilla and Grace Jette of New York, New York as well as several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jewell Vaughn Stokes and a sister, Clara Prescott.
