GLOUCESTER: Margaret M. “Peggy” (Gayton) Roaden Mitchell, 76, died peacefully surrounded by her family, Thursday, October 29, 2009 in the Seacoast Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Gloucester following a long illness. She was the wife of the late John Mitchell who died in January 2000.
Born in Gloucester on October 22, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Ruth (Lowe) Gayton. A lifelong resident of Gloucester, she was a graduate of Gloucester High School class of 1953.
Peggy was employed as the head cashier at the Registry of Motor Vehicles for twenty-five years before her retirement. Following retirement, she had worked part-time as a cashier at the Agawam Diner in Rowley.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Gloucester and a former member of the Rebecca Lodge and the Cape Ann Women of the Moose, Chapter #896. She was an avid knitter and enjoyed making sweaters and christening gowns for members of her extended family. Peggy’s quick wit and sense of humor will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Nannette (LaChance) Roaden of Gloucester, two grandchildren, M/Sgt. Jason Theriault and his wife, Tammy currently stationed at Eglin Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach, FL and Nicole Provencial and her husband, David of West Boylston, four great-grandchildren, Tyler, Zachary and Ian Theriault and Zachary Provencial, many nieces, nephews and dear friends, including Katherine Flanders of Pittsfield, Mary Parisi, Bonnie Cuddyer and Marilyn LaChance all of Gloucester. She was also predeceased by her son, Steven Roaden, four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Thomas and Virginia Gayton, Albert and Edith Gayton, Foster Gayton and Richard and Suzie Gayton.
Her funeral service will be held on Monday, November 9th in the Cherry Hill Cemetery, Gloucester at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours.
