Obituary

Rev. Thomas D. Conway, 75, passed away at St. Patrick’s Manor in Framingham on Priesthood Sunday, October 25th, 2009. He was born in Medford to his parents John M. and Helen F. (Hurley) Conway. Tom was raised in Medford and is a graduate of Malden Catholic High School, Class of 1952. He was a member of the Boy Scouts who earned the highest honor of Eagle Scout. He attended Boston College for a short while before deciding to enter St. Johns Seminary. He received his undergraduate degree in 1956 and his Masters in Theology in 1960. On February 2nd, 1960, Thomas was ordained a Roman Catholic Priest for the Archdiocese of Boston at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston. His first assignments included Immaculate Conception Parish in Marlborough in 1960, St. John the Baptist Parish in Haverhill in 1969 and Corpus Christi Parish in Auburndale in 1973. He was named an Associate Pastor at St. Patrick’s Church in Lawrence in 1976. In 1981, Fr. Tom was named Pastor of St. Catherine’s Church in Charlestown. In October of 1985, he was named Pastor of St. Margaret’s Church in Dorchester. He served as the Coordinator for Prison Ministry as well as being the Vicar Forane for the Central Region Vicariate from 1987 to 1997. Fr. Tom was named Pastor of St. Athanasius Church in Reading in 1997. He remained at St. Athanasius until achieving status as a Senior Priest in 2005. He received his Masters Degree in Religious Education from Emmanuel College in 1970 and has written several books on the subject which are still being used by many local parishes . He enjoyed spending time at his home in Gloucester with his family and fellow priests. He is survived by his sister, Fran Conway Welch of Charlotte, North Carolina; by his nephews, Stephen Welch of Lawndale, North Carolina and John Welch of Rockville, Maryland; and by his niece, Elizabeth Johnson of Lansing, Michigan. He is also survived by eleven grandnieces and grandnephews. Along with his parents, Fr. Tom was predeceased by his nephew Michael Welch. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Athanasius Church, 300 Haverhill St. in Reading on Thursday October 29th at 11 AM. Father Conway will lie in state at St. Athanasius Church on Wednesday October 28th from 4-8 PM. Relatives & friends are invited to attend. Services on Thursday will conclude with interment in Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
