PEABODY- Arthur G. Hoffman, 77, of Peabody, husband of the late Althea E. (Parker) Hoffman, formerly of Salem, died Friday, August 29, 2003 at the Metro West Medical Center, Natick, following a long illness.
Born in Morristown, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Freeman and Alice (Turner) Hoffman.
A Navy veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict, he served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He attained the rating of Seaman First Class and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action in the Okinawa area
Prior to his retirement in the late 1980's, he was employed for 30 years at Daly Cardinal Health in Peabody.
A resident of Salem for 40 years before moving to Peabody 3 years ago, Mr. Hoffman was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Church, where he served as an usher, was a member of the Holy Name and was a volunteer at the weekly church bingo games. Active in veterans organizations, he was a member of the DAV, The American Legion, Herman A. Spear Post #331, the VFW, all of Beverly, The Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Paralyzed Veterans of America, and the National Order of Trench Rats, a volunteer group within the DAV through which he volunteered at local veterans hospitals.
He is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Arthur J. and Anne Hoffman of Middleton, douglas G. Hoffman of San Marcos, Texas, Scott E. and Rachel Hoffman of Peabody, one daughter and son-in-law, Joya A. and Paul Callahan of Mount Holly, New Jersey, eight grandchildren, Alycia, Allison, and Angela Hoffman of Middleton, Abigail and Adam Hoffman, of Peabody, Shawn, Devin and Jessica Callahan of Mount Holly, New Jersey, two sisters, Alice Ianone of Gilbert, PA, Shirley Norman of Denville, New Jersey and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Wilma Elliott.
His funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 3, 2003, at 9 am from the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 am at the Immaculate Conception Church, Hawthorne Blvd., Salem. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Tuesday, 4 to 8 pm. Burial is in Oakdale Cemetery, Middleton.
