Mary (McRae) Hyland, age 88, a lifelong resident of Taunton, died on October 25, 2009 after a period of failing health. She was a resident of Marian Manor. She was the wife of the late Thomas M. Hyland. She was the daughter of the late John and Georgianna (Before) McRae.
Mary graduated from Taunton High School, class of 1938, and attended Bridgewater Normal School to prepare to be a teacher.
Mary worked for many years as a telephone operator for New England Telephone in Taunton. She was a member of the Pioneers- the retired telephone workers’ organization- and enjoyed monthly luncheons with them.
She enjoyed playing the piano, gardening, reading, listening to music, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She was the loving mother of Virginia H.Young of Taunton, Mary Lou Hyland of Norton, and a son Thomas, who predeceased her. She leaves a sister, Gertrude Taylor of Marian Manor, and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves three grandchildren: Christopher Thomas Young of Halethorpe, Maryland and his wife Diane; Stephanie Hyland Turnipseed of Napa, California and her husband Jay; Kevin Hyland of West Dennis; and one great granddaughter, Abigail Jordan Young of Maryland.
Calling hours are omitted. Services before and after the mass of Christian burial are private. All friends and relatives are welcome to attend the funeral mass at St Andrews Church in Taunton on Thursday October 29th at 11:00AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory may be made to the Marian Manor Activities Fund. The O’Keefe-Wade Funeral Home of Taunton is assisting the family with the arrangements
