Obituary

Dorothy Mary (Hanchett) Small, of Curtis Street, passed away on Saturday, October 24th at her home.

Dorothy was born in New Haven on May 4, 1919 the daughter of George and Margaret (Shanley) Hanchett. She was married to Charles Small on October 10, 1942. Dorothy, Charles, and family moved to Mystic in 1957. She was a stay at home mom raising 3 children and later caring for her grandchildren at her Mystic residence.

She was a founding member of St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church. She enjoyed many trips with the CT Telso Group and Ten pin bowling. She was an avid swimmer following her childhood along the Quinnipiac River.

“Lady” was predeceased by her husband Charles and daughter Margaret. She is survived by her children, Patricia Macek and Edward Small, her loving family; grandchildren, Crystal Sides, Jeff Davis, Michael Lamb, Melissia Holland, Donald Ferguson, Jennifer Grimm, Christopher Small, Erica Wright, and Sean St. Arnauld; great-grandchildren, Colby, Robert, Margaret, Cindy, Amaya, Adeline, Regina, Myles, Lincoln, and Jackson; all whom will miss her famous “tollhouse cookies” and “peanut butter balls” they enjoyed on the holidays. “Nanny” was a home oriented person and was depended on greatly by her family.

Special thanks to Mystic Medical, Hospice of Southeastern CT, and to her caregivers, especially Martha Monroe.

Her family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Thursday from 1-1:45pm, followed by a service at 2pm. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, 69 Groton Long Point Rd, Groton CT 06340.
