WORCESTER-George J. Gavin, 80, of Worcester died peacefully Saturday, October 24th in the Rose Monahan Hospice Home in the presence of his loving wife Ginny and his dear friends Carole Chambers and Marge Kolothros both of New York and Charlie and Carrie Kaliri of Northborough. He leaves his wife of 51 years, Virginia A. (Chicoine) Gavin; a brother, Raymond Gavin of Santa Maria, CA; two sisters, Eleanor White and her husband, Russell of Nova Scotia and Lena Oland and her husband, John of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; many nephews and nieces and a brother-in-law, Gerald J. Chicoine of Worcester with whom he shared many happy memories. Seven brothers, Terrence, Clifton, Lester, Howard, Romey, Arnold and Harry Gavin and four sisters Pearl McInnis, Dulcina Gavin, Jane Miller and Maureen Gavin predeceased him.
He was born in Prince Edward Island, Canada the son of John and Emily (Harper) Gavin. Mr. Gavin had worked for the United States Post Office as a letter carrier for 30 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of Christ the King Church and served as a Eucharistic Minister and altar server there, the Knights of Columbus, Council 12691 at Christ the King, the National Letter Carriers Association and the Disabled American Veterans. He worked with Fr. DiOrio and his ministry for over 20 years and the Worcester Diocese Office of Communication for the TV Mass. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. He enjoyed fishing, his flower gardens, traveling and rooting for the Boston Red Sox. He was as avid handball player and won several New England Championships. His greatest joy was reaching out to those in need, administering communion to the infirm and visiting with the sick.
The funeral is Wednesday, October 28th from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a Mass at 11:00 AM in Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant Street. Burial will be in St. Roch’s Cemetery, Oxford. Calling hours are Tuesday, October 27th from 5:00 until 8:00 PM in the funeral home.
