Charles J. Bernard 79, of Franklin, died Tuesday October 20, 2009 at the Maples Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Wrentham, following a brief illness. He was the husband of Margaret C. (Greene) Bernard.
Born December 15, 1929 in Elmwood, Connecticut a son of the late Clifford and Alice (Landry) Bernard, he had been a resident of West Hartford, Connecticut for many years before moving to Franklin in 1968.
Educated in West Hartford schools and a graduate of William Hall High School he continued his education at Nichols College, and was a graduate of the University of Connecticut with a degree in Business Administration.
Mr. Bernard was a retired senior vice president of Kaler, Carney, Liffler Insurance, Co., and for many years worked as the regional manager for Continental Insurance Co.
Mr. Bernard served proudly in the United States Marine Corps., during the Korean War, where he attained the rank of Sergeant and was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged in October 1953.
His interests included playing golf and spending time with his family.
He was a thirty year member of Franklin Country Club and a communicant of St. Mary’s Church.
In addition to his wife he is survived by a son David M. Bernard of LaJolla, California, a brother Richard C. Bernard of W. Hartford, Ct., also surviving are his grandchildren Andre & Christian Bernard.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral with Military Honors on Saturday October 24th, at 9:15AM from the Charles F. Oteri & Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St. Franklin (www.oterifuneralhome.com) with a funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church 1 Church Sq. Franklin, at 10AM.
Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
