James Daniel “Danny” Matheny, Sr, 61, of Summerville, husband of 39 years to Susan M. Matheny entered into eternal rest on Thursday, October 15, 2009.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, October 18, 2009 at 4 o’clock at James A. Dyal Funeral Home Chapel, Summerville. Burial will be held at a later date in Florence National Cemetery. Danny was born January 25, 1948 in Florence, South Carolina, son of the late Raymond and Mary Agnew Matheny. He graduated from McClenaghan High School, class of 1967. He attended USC Extension in Florence on a basketball scholarship. He served in the United States Army from 1968 until 1970 serving a year in Vietnam as a Sergeant. During his tour in Vietnam, he was awarded a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze service stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Air Medals and Expert Rifle. Upon his return to the states, he completed his duty at Ft. Hood, Texas. He was a network manager for BellSouth in Florence. In 1992 he transferred to Summerville, SC where he completed 38 years with BellSouth before retiring. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Florence and he enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing.
Surviving in addition to his wife are: 1 son: James Daniel Matheny, Jr. (Fran) of Summerville. 1 daughter: Lindsey Matheny Smith (Parker) of North Charleston. 1 granddaughter: Hunter Elizabeth Matheny of Summerville. 2 brothers: R.W. “Dickie” Matheny (Hazel) of Edisto Beach and Donald Agnew Matheny of Florence.
