Obituary

Arthur W. "Bud" Herman, a resident of Melrose for more than 60 years, died unexpectedly at his home in Melrose on Wednesday, October 14, 2009. He was 81 years old.

Bud was born in Boston on February 16, 1928 to the late Lewis and Lillian (Gilbert) Herman. He grew up in Malden for a short period time where he attended school. Bud went on to graduated from Stoneham High School. He also attended Georgetown University in Arlington, Virginia, and received a degree in Business Administration. Bud enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on February 24, 1951 and served his country during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged on February 23, 1954 with the rank of Sergeant. Bud joined his parents in 1954 with running the family business known as Pioneer Food Store located on Main Street, Melrose, at Franklin Square. In 1970 he franchised with Jack-In-The-Box of Wilmington and served as a unit manager until 1971. In 1971 he became District Manager/Field Supervisor for American Snacks, Inc., of Chelsea where he oversaw 16 restaurants and snack bars in greater Boston area until 1975. In 1975 he became Unit Manager/Franchise Owner of International House of Pancakes in Malden until 1979. In 1979 he became Assistant Manager of Gino's, Inc., of the greater Boston area where he assisted in maintenance and operation of restaurant and fast food operations. He retired in 1982 after a successful career in the food industry. Bud was a devoted friend of "Bill W".

Bud is the former husband of Kathleen M. "Kay" (Whyte) Herman. He is the devoted father of Stephen Herman and his wife Diane Galvin of Bradford and Bradley Herman of Melrose. He is the loving grandfather of Stephen Herman Jr., of Newton, NH, Brendan Herman of Bradford, Lynsey Herman of Newton, NH, and his great-granddaughters; Juliana and Isabella. He is the beloved brother of Phyllis Goldman and her husband Alan of Santa Barbara, CA.

Bud's Funeral Services and burial were held privately.
