GEORGE J. BUTTRICK, a Hingham resident for the past 58 years, died on Friday, Oct. 9th at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He was 85. He was born in South Boston and raised and educated in Canton. Mr. Buttrick was the Regional Sales Manager for the Dodge Corp. and was associated with a number of auto dealerships including Peter Fuller's Cadillac Olds in Boston and Whipple Dodge in Hingham. He served with distinction during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps, 14th Airforce, 22nd Squadron and received a Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Mr. Buttrick was active in local and state political affairs serving on the Hingham Light Board and was active in Endicott Peabody's campaign for governor. He also had the honor of playing golf with Lawrence Welk during one of his visits to the area.
He was the husband of the late Nancy (Ross) Buttrick and brother-in-law of Graham J. Ross, N. Peter Ross and Cynthia R. Weston all of Sarasota, FL. Uncle of Douglas W. Ross, Leslie Kellogg, Nancy Harrup, Heather Ross, N. Stanley Ross and Anne Cutts. Also survived by his special friend Vera Seliga of Hingham and his cousin Steve Buttrick of Weymouth.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Resurrection, 1057 Main St. (Rt. 228), Hingham on Friday, Oct. 16th at 10 AM.
Friends may visit at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham on Thursday evening from 6-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
Interment in Mt. Wollaston Cemetery, Quincy.
