Augusta, GA – Mr. William Haven Maypole, 68, entered into rest on October 3, 2009.
Bill was born on April 16, 1941 in Oak Park, Illinois and was preceded in death by his parents, John James Maypole and Althea Floyd Benjamin. He received a B.S. in Industrial Design from the University of Kansas and a Masters of Business Administration from Michigan State University.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Rutti Endres Maypole, and his children Kathryn Maypole Allen, William Haven (Melissa) Maypole II, and Amanda Endres (Benjamin) Ebel. His beloved grandchildren are Robert Franklin Allen III, Thomas Hart Allen, Kelsey Elaine Maypole, William Haven Maypole III, Julia Kathryn Maypole, Taylor Kay Maypole and Haven Ellen Ebel. Mr. Maypole is also survived by his brothers, John Floyd (Nancy) Maypole of Mt. Lakes, New Jersey and Charles George (Tricia) Maypole of Toccoa, Georgia and many nieces and nephews.
He was most proud of his service in the United States Army during the 1960s when he served as Company Commander of Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment in North Korea. During his career as an automotive designer, he held positions with several automobile companies including Chief Designer of Buick and Director of Design for Volkswagen of America. Upon his retirement from automotive design, he began a career as a portrait artist with commissions from many prestigious institutions including the Augusta National Golf Club. Bill will be remembered as a gentle, sometimes outrageous, always generous, extremely talented, and wickedly funny man - who never took life too seriously, loved beauty, enjoyed people, painted boldly, was patriotic to the core, and loved a good argument so much that he often crossed party lines just to spur the debate.
The family extends a special debt of gratitude to the compassionate healthcare professionals who cared for Bill during his extended illness.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday October 6, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at 819 Barrett Lane, Augusta, GA 30909.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday October 7, 2009 at The Church of The Good Shepherd, 2230 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30904. The Very Reverend Robert D. Fain will be officiating. Pallbearers will be Michael Ash, Craig Calvert, Larry Meeks, Sam Nicholson, Michael Roach and Gerald Woods.
