Obituary

GLOUCESTER: George A. Berg, 87, of Bay View died Saturday, October 3, 2009 in the Addison Gilbert Hospital Hospice Unit following a brief illness. He was the husband of Elizabeth M. “Betty” (Marchant) Berg.
Born in Gloucester on October 23, 1921, he was the son of the late Claus and Carolina “Lena” (Swanson) Berg. He was a graduate of the Gloucester High School class of 1941.
A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he served in the Aleutian Islands and was honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant in October of 1945.
George was employed as a carpenter for the late John Day, Harold Dexter and W. Herbert Goodick. He was an expert in all aspects of carpentry. He built his own home and helped numerous others in the family build their homes. He had also crafted the doors for the Annisquam Village Church.
He demonstrated his love for his family by making them many beautiful pieces of furniture and toys for his children and grandchildren. He built a boat for his family giving three generations fond memories of boating, lobstering and fishing.
George was also skilled at cutting granite and built walls and flower beds for his yard. George was always actively working on a carpentry project and continued to do so until his recent illness.
He played baseball for the Town of Rockport in the 1950’s and was valued for his pitching skills. He loved the Red Sox and was asking about the game scores in his final days. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed baking Nisu Bread for his family. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his wife of sixty-one years, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sheila and Bruce Wynne of Sturbridge, Lois and David Warner of Alton Bay, NH and Ft. Lauderdale, FL; three grandchildren, Deborah (Wynne) and her husband, Daniel Levine of Franklin, MA, James P. and Andrew G. Wynne of Enfield, CT; and one great-grandson, Braedan S. Levine of Franklin. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Nancy Donigian, Georgina, wife of Joseph Grace, Caroline Marchant, Nancy Craybeck and many nieces and nephews and their families. He was also predeceased by his sister, Marie McGrath and two brothers, Carl and Edward Berg.
Private services will be held in the Locust Grove Cemetery, Lanesville. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the charity of one’s choice.
