Obituary

Raymond P. Smith, age 63 of Lowell, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, in Lowell surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Lowell on August 22, 1946, a son of the late Harry and Florence (Abrahamson) Smith. Raymond was a lifelong resident of Lowell and attended Lowell schools.

He was a painter for most of his life, and had recently worked with Hertiage Manor in Lowell prior to his illness. Raymond loved painting, having painted everything from houses to his own artwork. He also enjoyed collecting lighthouses, music and old movies. Raymond was a kind and gentle soul to all who knew him.

He is survived by his brothers, Norman Smith and his companion, Dorothy Connely of Billerica, Gary Smith and his wife Patricia, Robert and David Smith, all of Lowell; his sisters, Marianne Smith of Saugus, Pamela O'Driscoll of Tyngsboro, and Deborah Smith, both of Lowell; also many nieces, nephews, a dear friend, Arthur "Bud" Carlson of Maynard, and many dear friends and staff at Heritage Manor. The family would like to extend their gratitude to two special nurses who cared for him, Mariya Mwaniki and Alice Merenga. He was also the brother of the late Ronald, Donald and Richard Smith.

Relatives and friends may call at the M. R. LAURIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 295 Pawtucket St., Lowell, on Thursday, Oct. 8, from 2 to 6pm. A prayer service will follow at the Funeral Home at 6 o'clock. Interment will be private. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St, Framingham, MA 01701.
