Obituary

SPENCER: Robert E. “Benny” Sasseville, 83, formerly of 22 Bellevue Dr., died Saturday, October 3 at UMASS Memorial Hospital- 55 Lake Ave.No., Worcester.

He leaves a brother Wilfred G. Sasseville, Jr. and his wife Phyllis of Spencer, three nephews Mark Sasseville and his wife Laureen, and Jeffrey Sasseville and his wife Michele all of Spencer, and Steven Sasseville and his wife Susan of Brook Park, OH., three nieces Deanne Benicaso and her husband Bryan of Spencer, Marlene Murphy and Christine Frank both of Berea, OH., four step sons Charles McEvoy, Jr., Col. Richard McEvoy (U.S.Army, Retired), Craig McEvoy and Joseph McEvoy, a step daughter Luann Varney, six step grandchildren Patrick, Michelle, Jacob, Kirsten, Brandon and Christopher, several grand nieces and nephews, his best friends Emile “Slug” Gaucher, Bob Ferrazza, Earl Bengston and Bob “Hap” L’Heureux. He is predeceased by his first wife Eleanor (Cavanaugh) Sasseville and his brother Leo Sasseville.

Benny was a machinist for many years at Rexnord Corp. in Auburn, before retiring in 1990. He later worked in maintenance at Howe Village and also for Webster First Federal Credit Union. He served with the U.S. Army during WWII, on the “big island”, his words for Staten Island, N.Y. He was a member and Past Commander of the Gaudette-Kirk Post 138 American Legion in Spencer, and the Spencer Fish & Game Club. He was charter member and founder of the Massasoit Golf League at Bay Path Golf Course in E.Brookfield, which he was the “commissioner” for many years. He was an avid golfer and member of the Main South League and Growlers League both at Hillcrest C.C. in Leicester. He enjoyed all sports and playing pitch in area pitch leagues.

Born in Spencer, he was the son of Wilfred G. and Rachel M. (Aucoin) Saseville, Sr. He graduated from Worcester Boys Trade School.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, October 7 from the J.HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 7 Church St., Spencer. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Mary,Queen of the Rosary Cemetery, Spencer. Calling hours are Tuesday, Oct. 6 from 4 to 7p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to V.N.A.
