MANCHESTER, NH: Robert E. Hardy, Sr., 81, formerly of Gloucester, died Friday, October 2, 2009 in the Mount Carmel Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Manchester following an extended illness. He was the husband of the late Ethel A. (Corliss) Hardy who died in 1995.
Born in Gloucester on August 5, 1928, he was the son of the late George M. and Louise H. (McGrath) Hardy. He had resided in Gloucester most of his life before moving to Manchester, NH in 1996. He had also once served in the National Guard.
Robert was employed as a commercial fisherman out of Gloucester for forty-seven years before his retirement in 1984. He was a former member of both the Gloucester Lodge of Elks No. 892 and Cape Ann Chapter No. 1471, Loyal of Moose.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Rose L. and John A. Turgeon of Chelsea and Julie A. and Gus Sclafani of Gloucester, three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert E., Jr. and Nancy Hardy, Timothy J. and Patricia E. Hardy all of Manchester, NH and Jonathan J. and Sharon Hardy of Merrimack, NH, twelve grandchildren, Chesinta Ganas, Patrick Wilson, Joseph, Joanne and Sal Sclafani, Christopher, Timothy, Kevin, Christina and Charlene Hardy and Richard and Jay Bilodeau, thirty great-grandchildren, three sisters, Barbara Agostini, Margie and her husband, Fred Carlson and Carol Martell-Beggs, one brother, Donald Barnes and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his son, Christopher J. Hardy, five brothers and four sisters.
His funeral services will be held on Tuesday in the Calvary Cemetery, Eastern Ave., Gloucester at 1 p.m. Visiting hours will be held on Monday in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester from 4 – 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
