Obituary

Scannell, Elizabeth (FitzSimmons) a lifelong resident of Jamaica Plain and parishioner of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, August 20, 2003, at age 85. Beloved wife of the late David D. Scannell Jr. Loving mother of Elizabeth Abbott Burke and her husband John of West Roxbury, Joanna E. Scannell of Westwood, David D. Scannell III and his wife Mary of Bristol, CT, and Henry F. Scannell of Jamaica Plain. Much loved grandmother of Daniel, Nathan and John Abbott of West Roxbury, David D. Scannell IV of New York and Molly Scannell of Bristol, CT. Sister of Grace Fay of Winchester, Ann Bulman of CT, and the late Jean Kiszeli of California.

Funeral from the Robert J. Lawler & Crosby Funeral Home 1803 Centre St. WEST ROXBURY on Monday August 25th at 9am. Funeral Mass in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Jamaica Plain at 10am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours Sunday 2-4 & 7-9pm. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Elizabeth’s name to the Maryknoll Sisters, Maryknoll, NY, or to the Schraft Pavilion Activity Fund, Deutsches Altenheim, 2222 Centre St. West Roxbury, MA 02132.

Mrs. Scannell was a graduate of Girl’s Latin School, class of 1934, and Simmons College class of 1938, also receiving a graduate degree in education from Boston State College. Active for many years in the alumnae affairs of both GLS and Simmons College, she was treasurer of her college class for over 30yrs. She was a WWII veteran of the US Navy. For many years a librarian with the Boston Public Library, she was also for 20yrs the administrative librarian for the Boston School Committee, retiring in 1982 with emerita status. She studied woodworking for over 30yrs at the Eliot School in Jamaica Plain, making furniture for her family and her beloved summer cottage on Prince Edward Island. Mrs. Scannell was also active for many years in the Jamaica Plain Tuesday Club and the Boston League of Women Voters.
