Charles E. Herman, 81, died Tuesday at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He was born in April, 1922 in Stonington and was raised in Old Mystic. After receiving his education, he served in the US Army during World War II, seeing action in North Africa.
In earlier years, Mr. Herman worked at the Mystic Shipyard before joining Pfizer where he worked for 33 years before retiring in 1983.
He was a member of Bishop Seabury Church in Groton and the Mystic VFW.
He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Cecelia L. Herman who died in 1997.
Mr. Herman leaves two sisters, Helen Tift of Groton and Ann Wells of Old Mystic; a son, Larry C Herman of Ledyard, 5 daughters, Patricia L. Dana of NC, Karen L. Smith, Tina M. Davis, Kimberly A. Lee and Aurore F. Brazee, all of Groton, 28 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
The family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, historic downtown Mystic on Thursday from 6-8pm. A Service will be held at Bishop Seabury Church on Friday at 10am.
Burial with military honors will be in Elm Grove Cemetery.
