Thomas J. McElroy of Marshfield, 92 years old (born October 8, 1916), died peacefully at home with his family on Wednesday, September 23, 2009. He was the son of the late Frank & Sophia McElroy. Twin brother of the late Richard McElroy, brother of the late Frank McElroy, John McElroy, Charlotte Haley & Anna Marston.
Tom operated an auto service station and tire store in the 1930’s. During WWII he worked as a welder in the Quincy Shipyard. Employed by Starkweather Co. following the war, he put his talents to work landscaping and building specialty walls out of brick and stone. In the early 1950’s Tom started his own asphalt business Thomas McElroy & Son, in Needham. In 1952 he built the family summer home in Rexhame. In 1960 the McElroy’s moved to Millis where he built homes and lived until 1964 when the family moved to his beloved Marshfield. Tom started in the Real Estate business. He started Homeland Real Estate, later developed and owned the successful Marshfield Real Estate and Harborside Realty. Tom built and sold many homes in the town of Marshfield. He always prided himself on his honesty and being able to lend a helping hand to his co-workers and to that first time buyer. He worked with many wonderful people during the years.
Tom married Phyllis (LaCoste) July 22, 1935. They were married for 72 wonderful years, when Phyllis passed away in January of 2008. They enjoyed years of happiness with their many friends and family in Englewood, Florida during the winters. Tom’s hobbies included fishing, shuffleboard, shelling, walking and baseball. He never missed a chance to sing a song for his family or play his harmonica. He was a loyal Red Sox fan his entire life.
He was the loving father of Janet Hanscom and husband Warren of Marshfield, Thomas J. McElroy Jr. and wife Joan of Dennis and Valerie Blinn and her husband Joe of Green Harbor.
Bumpa was the Loving Grandfather of Laurel, Lisa, Lynda, Barbara, Cathy, Dana, Derryl, Jayda & T.J.. and the loving great-grandfather of Mayalin, Jared, Jeffrey, Lindsay, Gregory, Mark, Jessica, Luke, Andrew, Danny, Jack, Brendan & Molly.
Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Green Harbor, MA at 10:00 am on Thursday October 1, 2009. Burial to follow Mass at Couch Cemetery in Marshfield.
