Obituary

Worcester—John F. Duggan, 83, of Worcester died Thursday, September 24, 2009, at Holy Trinity Nursing Center after an illness.

He leaves his wife, Aurea (Almeida), a daughter, Judy Freeman, of Fairfax Station, Virginia, and a son, John, of Boxborough. He leaves his sister Catherine Feen, of Worcester; a granddaughter, Lauren Freeman, as well as nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother, Martin, and sister, Margaret. Born in Pepperell, he was the son of John and Annie (Deignan) Duggan. In the Navy, he was trained as a radio operator. During World War II, he served in the South Pacific on the staffs of Admirals Fletcher and Noble. His naval ribbons include seven battle stars. He served aboard the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt aircraft carrier during the Korean Conflict.

After graduating from New England School of Accounting, he worked at the State Department in Washington D.C. He transferred to the Internal Revenue Service and was an IRS Agent for 35 years. He audited major companies, banks, and insurance companies in the Worcester area. He was the first examining officer in the state to earn an award for his outstanding work. Following his government retirement, he became a public accountant specializing in tax and financial advice.

His favorite sport was tennis, and he organized many men’s doubles leagues.

The memorial mass will be held at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 25 Fales Street, Worcester at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 26th. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
