Edward S. Gonsalves, Sr.

Edward S. Gonsalves, Sr., 73, of Norton passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday September 15, 2009. He was the beloved husband of Anna E. (Ramos) Gonsalves to whom he was wed for 50 years.
Born in Boston, MA on October 27, 1935 he was a son of the late James and Olga (Sampson) Gonsalves.
Ed grew up and was educated in Marshfield and was a graduate of Marshfield High School. Upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Marines and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant after serving during the Korean Conflict.
After being discharged from the service he married his wife Anna and shortly afterwards, thru grants under the G.I. Bill, he was able to further his studies by first attending Eastern Nazarene College and then transferring to North Eastern University where he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Mr. Gonsalves was a retired Engineer having worked at Northrop Grumman in Norwood for over 25 years before retiring in 1995. He had formerly been employed at Hasbro in Pawtucket, also as an Engineer.
A resident of Norton for the past 41 years, Ed was a member of the Lieutenant Harold A. Healy American Legion Post 222 in Norton. He enjoyed deer hunting by both gun and bow & arrow, playing chess, card games, poker being his favorite, playing pool, reading and watching football on television.
Ed’s family was the center of his life and in his early years he was active with his Cape Verdean culture.
In addition to his beloved wife he is survived by his devoted children Lisa M. Gonsalves, PhD and her married spouse Diane Pullen of Jamaica Plain, Kim M. Leonard-Gonsalves and her partner Jorge Medina of Stoughton and Edward S. Gonsalves, Jr. and his wife Donna of Norton. He was the brother of Sue Ramos of Fall River and the late Louis Gonsalves and Jeannie Andrade, also survived by his cherished grandson Stephen A. Gonsalves of Norton, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visiting hours, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Friday September 18th from 5-8 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday September 19th at 11:00 A.M. in the Calvary Pentecostal Church 33 Braley Road East Freetown, MA 02717. Military honors will be held at the conclusion of services and a reception will follow at the church.
In lieu in lieu of flowers, Ed’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to Hospice, Community Visiting Nurse Agency, Inc. 10 Emory St. Attleboro, MA 02703.
