Whitman – Elizabeth A. “Betty” (Morrissey) Laing 78, a forty year resident of Whitman, formerly of Charlestown, died Monday September 14 after a period of failing health. She was the beloved wife of the late William Laing.
Born in Boston and raised in Charlestown she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Powers) Morrissey. She attended Charlestown schools and had worked for the famous Schrafft’s Candy Company.
Betty was a familiar face in Whitman greeting morning customers for several years at the local news stand “Whitman News”, before moving to Braintree with her daughters.
She enjoyed cooking, baking and was an avid Red Sox fan. She was a loyal fan of her own children’s sporting events and loved following and watching their many games through out the years.
She is survived by her loving children, Grace Marie Laing and Susan Laing both of Braintree, and Shirley Porter and her husband David of Middleboro, William Laing and his wife Karen of Peachtree City, GA, Matthew Laing and his wife Elaine of Braintree, Robert Laing and his wife Stephanie of Whitman, her sister, Patricia Johnson of Charlestown and her sister-in-law Shirley M. Laing of Malden. She is also survived by her grandchildren David, Elizabeth Jennifer, Mitchell, Samantha, Ryan, Amanda, Thomas and Kamryn, and her great grandchild Joshua, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Michael, Thomas and Richard and Shirley Morrissey, Helen Kerns, Lorraine Leonard, and Grace Szwarc. She will be missed by her beloved puppy “Skittles”.
Her funeral service will be held Monday September 21st at 10:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman, followed by a mass at 11 AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. Burial will follow at 1:45 PM in the Mass. Veteran’s Cemetery, Bourne. Visiting hours will be held Sunday September 20th from 2 – 5 PM.
