Jesup- Mary Lizzie Blocker Griffis, age 89, passed away Monday, September 14, 2009 at her residence. She was born in Tattnall County on May 19, 1920 and lived most of her life in Wayne County. She was a homemaker and a farmers wife. She married Julian S. Griffis on August 24, 1944 and was married until his death on September 26, 2008.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Julian S. Griffis; grandson: R.J. Griffis; daughter: Linda Gail Griffis; mother: Mary Tempie Cribbs Blocker; father: Osgood “Hoss” Blocker; three brothers: Hubert Blocker, Herman Blocker and Theodore Blocker.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law: Ronnie and Bonnie Griffis; daughter and son -in-law: Marlee and Ivey Jones; four grand-daughters: Vickie Jones, Kathy and Fred McCormick, Nancy and John Dawson, and Kristy and Robert Arnold; four great-grandchildren: Kayle and Karson Arnold and Lance and Tabitha Dawson; one brother: L.C. Blocker of Glennville; one sister: Myrtle Blocker Hager of New Smyrna; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at 11:00am from the James R. Gordon Memorial Chapel with the Reverend David Hubbs, Reverend Larry Copley and Reverend Stanley Todd officiating.
Interment will follow in Ephesus Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening beginning at 6 pm at the funeral home.
Active Pallbearers will be Joe B. Harris, Carl Harris, Franklin Griffis, Randy Franks, Johnny Harris, and Herman Lewis Sr.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Mary Ann Griffis, Hospice of South Georgia, Hubert and Aletha Howard, Emily Harris, John and Nell Tyre, J.C. and Lynn Walker, Easop and Betty Fuller and Donnie and Debra Wheelis.
