Katherine T. “Kay” (Mars) Mahoney, 92, died Monday September 7th unexpectedly at her home .She was the wife of the late Bernard “Dod” Mahoney. Kay was born and brought up in Rockland, daughter of the late Herbert Mars and Katherine (McLaughlin) Mars-Ryan-Fitzgibbons. Kay was a graduate of Rockland High School. She and her husband “Dod” owned and operated Mahoney’s Liquors store in Whitman for many years. She enjoyed time spent with her family, friends and many acquaintances. Kay had an incredible spirit and zest for life. Her independence was most important to her.
“Aunt Tootie” is survived by her niece Fran McKenna and her husband David of Whitman, her great niece Joline Scriven of Middleboro,2 great nephews, Joe Scriven of Whitman, Francis “Bud” Scriven and his wife Dewi of Kingston; also her nephew Thomas Ryan of Brockton and the late Sean Ryan of Rockland ,his daughter Donna Ryan and her mother Dianne of Holbrook, lifelong friend of Fulvia ”Fuffie” Bailey of Rockland, her friend and neighbor, Joe Kennedy of Whitman and her feline companion Zimba the cat ,as well as many other nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Michael Larry Ryan of Rockland.
Her Services will be held on Saturday, September 12th at 8:15 from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 9:00AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. Interment will follow in the St. James Cemetery Whitman. Visitation will be held on Friday September 11th from 4:00-8:00PM.In lieu of Flowers donations may be made in her name to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, C/O Holy Ghost Church, 518 Washington St., Whitman, MA. 02382.
