Leonard C. R. Langer of Annisquam died September 6th at his home after a brief illness. His death came one week after his 87th birthday.
Mr. Langer, who was born in Cambridge, MA in 1922, attended the Shady Hill School and graduated from the Brown & Nichols School. He interrupted his studies at Harvard College in 1943 to enlist in the Navy, where he was a patrol bomber pilot in the South Pacific until 1946. He remained a pilot in the Naval Reserve and graduated from Harvard in 1947. He later received advanced masters and doctorate degrees from the Harvard Business School.
He was an Associate Professor at the Harvard Business School from 1951 to 1960, and from 1962 to 1964, Mr. Langer was the Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer of the Star Market Company. He then relocated to New York and became Vice President in charge of staff planning and development at the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company. With his wife of 55 years, the former Nancy Dorey, Mr. Langer visited bank offices in Europe, the Middle East and the Far East every year. Mr. and Mrs. Langer raised three sons, William, of Seattle, Leonard W., of Yarmouth, Maine and Stephen, of Wellesley and Annisquam. Following his retirement in 1986, he became an independent consultant to the banking industry for management training.
After his retirement, Mr. Langer returned to Annisquam, where he had summered since his early childhood. In addition to his long-standing interest in aviation and vintage airplanes, Mr. Langer was an avid woodworker, sailor and sailboat racing enthusiast all his life, and spent much of his time in retirement cruising the coast of southern Maine and the Virgin Islands. He was a lifetime member of the Annisquam Yacht Club, where he acted as treasurer and historian for many years, and was more recently involved as treasurer of Project Adventure in Gloucester.
Mr. Langer’s wife, Nancy, died in 2002. He is survived by his three sons, William, Leonard and Stephen and their wives, along with six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, and also by his brother, Bertrand of Tustin, California.
Burial will be private and no service is planned, but a reception celebrating his life will be held at the Annisquam Yacht Club in Gloucester at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 20th. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Langer’s name may be made to the Cape Ann Historical Association, 27 Pleasant Street, Gloucester, MA 01930
