Helen Chapin "Hennie" Conger, 97, passed away Monday at Fairview Odd Fellows Home in Groton.
She was born in Hartford CT November 16, 1911 to Sarah Newton Chapin and Robert Dudley Chapin.
She graduated from the Hartford Public Schools. She was predeceased by four sisters and a brother who was killed in World War II as well as her son David Christian Link Conger.
She married David Link Conger of Newtown CT on May 25, 1935. He predeceased her in 1980. She is survived by three children, Cicely Penny Shoemaker, Helen Chapin DeCiantis, and Alice Conger; 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren
During her life she was a Welcome Wagon Supervisor for New London County, and later was in real estate in the Mystic-Stonington area. She and her husband moved to Stonington in 1968 where she designed the Memorial Garden for Calvary Episcopal Church, where she was also a member of the Vestry, the Building and Grounds Committee and also acted as Flower Chairman for the church. She was also a member of the Wadawanuck Club, a member of the Junior League of Hartford and the Cotillian Club. She was a member of the Herb Society of America and served as chairman of the Connecticut Unit and also served on the National Board. She was also a member of the Stonington Garden Club.
A Memorial Service will be conducted at Calvary Episcopal Church on Saturday at 10am.
