Jennie M. (Lane) Duarte, 82, of New Bedford passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.
She was the loving wife of Manuel F. "Canuka" Duarte, Jr. with whom she shared 45 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Gloucester, MA, the daughter of the late Russell and Ethel (Banks) Lane, she lived in New Bedford most of her life.
Jennie worked as a lunch aide for over 20 years in the New Bedford Public School System before her retirement in 1989.
She loved family outings and spending time with her grandchildren. She spent lots of time playing bingo which she loved.
Survivors include her husband; 3 daughters, Jeanette Dean and her husband George of Newport, ME, Shirley Miller and her life partner Sarah of Cranston, RI and Pauline Lopes and her husband Henry of New Bedford; 4 sons, Russell Benson and his wife Diane and George Benson and his wife Dawn, all of Gloucester, Manuel A. Duarte and his wife Verna and John M. Duarte, all of New Bedford; 3 sisters, Shirley Height, Helen Lane and Josephine Jacobs, all of Gloucester; a brother, Arthur Lane of Gloucester; 28 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late Albert, Christopher, Thomas and Edmond "Peter" Benson and the sister of the late George, Donald and Leslie Lane.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Wednesday, September 9th at 8 AM. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours Tuesday, September 8th from 5-9 PM.
