Obituary

George Edward "Buzz" Hodgins, 78 of New Bedford died September 3, 2009 at Brandon Woods of Dartmouth after a long illness. He was the husband of Lorraine L. (Crook) Hodgins.

Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Peter and Ellen (Caton) Hodgins. He lived in New Bedford all of his life.

Mr. Hodgins was a graduate of New Bedford Vocational High School and was inducted into their athletic Hall of Fame in May 2009 for his achievements in football and baseball.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Bushnell.

Mr. Hodgins was formerly employed by Alden Corrugated for 33 years.

He was a member of the New Bedford Municipal Golf Course for over 40 years. He coached football and baseball for the South End Youth Athletic Association for fifteen years and in 2003 was inducted into the SEYAA Hall of Fame. Mr. Hodgins was also a founding member of the Greater New Bedford Pee Wee Football League.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Peter M. Hodgins and his wife Donna of South Dartmouth and a daughter, Beth L. Sylvia of New Bedford. He was the loving grandfather of Timothy Sylvia, Rachael Hodgins and Zachery Hodgins. He is also survived by a niece and a nephew.

He was the father-in-law of the late Michael Sylvia and the brother of the late Mary Grinnell.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford Tuesday, September 8th at 9 AM. Funeral Service in St. Martin's Episcopal Church at 10 AM. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours Monday, September 7th from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his honor to the Ford Rodman Military Museum, 1000c Rodney French Blvd. New Bedford, MA 02744.
