Whitman-Eugene S.”Gene” Cray, Jr., 80, died Tuesday September 1st in the Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital after a period of failing health. He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy A. (Roche) Cray. Gene was born and brought up in Boston, son of the late Eugene S. and Mary (Ackerman) Cray, Sr. He was a graduate of Dorchester high School. Gene has been a Whitman resident for 49 years a communicant of the Holy Ghost Church. He was a veteran of the Korean War, he served his country from 1951-1953, lifetime member of the Whitman VFW # 697 and was the past Grand Knight of the Whitman K Of C. Gene worked as a Letter Carrier for the Weymouth Post Office for many years. He was avid golfer and was a member of the Casey League in the K of C, also a bowler for the Weymouth Post Office bowling league.
He is survived by his children Donna Dubay of Virginia, Patricia Knowles of Marshfield and Christine Hannon of Whitman, his sisters Eleanor Butler of Quincy and Lynda Payne of Hollister, grandfather of 9 and great grandfather of 4, many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Robert Cray.
His services will be held on Saturday September 5th at 8:15AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 9:00AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman, burial will follow in the St. James Cemetery Whitman.
