John Francis Herlihy, age 77, by accident Sept. 1st. Born and raised in Wakefield, he was the son of the late Jerome and Mary (Slattery) Herlihy. A graduate of Wakefield High School with the class of 1949, he was the recipient of the Francis Ouimet Scholarship. He continued his education at Boston College and graduated with a B.S. in Accounting in 1953. A 42-year resident of Winchester, Mr. Herlihy was an accountant at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington for many years. John was a member of the Winchester Country Club, where he enjoyed golfing with his family. As an active member of St. Mary’s church, he and his late wife, Mitzi, served as parish greeters during mass. He was the beloved husband of the late Doris “Mitzi” (Brennan) and the loving father of John F. Jr. “Jay” and his wife Sarah of Belmont, Christopher and his wife Susan of Winchester and Elizabeth “Beth” Herlihy of Chestnut Hill. John was also the devoted grandfather of Linda, John F. III, Ryan, Julia and Charlotte and the dear brother of Mary Herlihy of Andover and the late Timothy Herlihy. His funeral will be held from the Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester on Sat. Sept. 5th at 8:30AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary’s Church, 155 Washington St., Winchester at 9:30AM. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held in the funeral home on Friday from 2-4 &7-9PM. Interment Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester. Late veteran US Navy.
