Obituary


SALEM, NH - Paul M. Martakos, 89, of Salem, NH, died Thursday evening August 27, 2009, in the Methuen Health and Rehabilitation Center, Methuen. He was the beloved husband of Alice (Efstathiou) Martakos of Salem.

Born in Lowell on February 5, 1920, he was a son of the late Martin and Stella (Psoinos) Martakos. He received his education in the Lowell school system.

An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country proudly during World War II as a Sergeant in the United States Army Air Corps 118th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron serving in China and Burma, India.

Prior to his retirement, Mr. Martakos had been employed for 25 years as a supervisor by the Raytheon Corporation in their South Lowell and Andover facilities. Earlier in life he had worked for the former Merrimack Mills in Lowell.

He was a member of Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Lowell and was also a member of the Greek American Legion and a lifetime member of the S.A.C. Club both in Lowell.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Lewis Martakos and his fiancee Pamela Metropolis of Tewksbury; his granddaughter Alexandra Martakos of Magnolia; a sister Pauline Paris of Lowell; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late Martin Martakos; father-in-law of the late Lori Martakos; and brother of the late Helen Coronis, James Martakos, Theodore Martakos and Nicholas Martakos.

Friends may call at DRACUT FUNERAL HOME 2159 Lakeview Avenue, DRACUT, on Tuesday from 4 until 8 PM. His Funeral will be held from the funeral home on Wednesday at 9 AM followed by his Funeral Service at 10 AM in Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, Lowell. Interment in Westlawn Cemetery, Lowell. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions my be made in his name to Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church Clark St., Lowell, MA 01854.
