Obituary

Bernice L. (Smith) Barnaby, 83, a longtime Plainville resident, died suddenly at her home on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009. She was the wife of the late Ivan J. "Barney" Barnaby, who died in 1989.

Born in Boston on Oct. 29, 1925, a daughter of the late Everett C. and Lillian (Lockwood) Smith, she was raised and educated in Boston, and had lived in Plainville for more than 49 years.

Mrs. Barnaby was a retired manufacturing specialist, having worked for the Polaroid Corp. in Norwood for many years.

During World War II, she enlisted and served in the Canadian Army. She attained the rank of sergeant, she was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, and was honorably discharged in August 1946.

She was a communicant of St. Martha's Church in Plainville, enjoyed playing Bingo, and trips to Foxwoods.

She also served the town of Plainville as a poll worker and as the warden for several years. She was also active in Plainville and North Attleboro Senior Citizen activities.

She is survived by a son, Steven J. Barnaby and his wife Ellen of Plainville; a daughter, Linda M. Dunn and her husband Michael of North Attleboro; three brothers, Donald Smith and his wife Mary of Reading, Gerald Smith and his wife Claire of Manchester, N.H., Lawrence Smith and his wife Margaret of Cape Cod; a sister, Shirley DiRusso of Medford; five grandchildren, Christine Daniele, Kerri Dunn, Jacqueline Barnaby, Joseph Dunn, Patricia Barnaby; three great-grandchildren, Anna Daniele, Nathan Daniele and Colin Flanagan.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral Monday at 9:15 a.m. from the Charles F. Oteri & Son Franklin Funeral Home (www.franklinfuneral.com) with a funeral Mass in St. Martha's Church, Route 1A, Plainville at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in the family lot in Shepardville Cemetery, Plainville.

Calling hours are Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m.
