Obituary

Alvie Lee Dorminy, 73, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Wednesday, August 19, 2009, at Dorminy Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 4 P.M. Friday, August 21, 2009, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Kelly Brown and the Rev. Dr. Mike Ruffin officiating. Eulogies will be delivered by Mark Dorminy, Dave Evans and Jake Evans. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church from 2:30 P.M. until the funeral hour.

Mr. Dorminy was born September 3, 1935 in Ben Hill County to the late Albert Walter and Nancy Ada Johnson Dorminy. A 1953 graduate of Fitzgerald High School, he graduated from Southern Business University in Atlanta in 1955. He was a veteran of the United States Army and retired as a Brigadier General in the Georgia National Guard after 36 years of service. A dedicated public servant, he served as Office Manager with Fitzgerald Water, Light and Bond Commission, was a former City Clerk with the City of Fitzgerald, and was appointed City Administrator in 1973 where he served until his retirement in 2001. Mr. Dorminy was past president of the Fitzgerald Jaycees, past president of the Fitzgerald Rotary Club, past Exalted Ruler of Fitzgerald Elks Lodge #1036, Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1994 and was named to the Georgia Municipal Association Hall of Fame. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, former Deacon Chairman, Chairman of the Restoration and Renewal Committee, and Church Administrator.

Mr. Dorminy is survived by his wife: Betty Jean Fulford Dorminy of Fitzgerald, GA; Children: Mark (Cindy) Dorminy of Nashville, TN and Lisa (David) Evans of Fitzgerald; Grandchildren: Dave and Jake Evans of Fitzgerald and Madeline Rose Dorminy of Nashville, TN; Brother: Gene (Sis) Dorminy of Fitzgerald, GA; Sister: Carolyn (John) Hackler of Fitzgerald, GA.
