Robert J. Hughes, Sr., 77, of Rockland died Sunday, August 16th in the South Shore Hospital, after a period of failing health. He was the husband of Clara L. (Lane) Hughes. Robert was born in Boston, grew up in Roxbury, son of the late John and Mary (Snyder) Hughes. Bob has been a Rockland resident for 44 years and a former member of the Rockland Eagles. He was a veteran of the Korean War, he served his country from 1954-1956. Robert was the owner of Norwood Shoes in West Roxbury for 5 years and also worked at Brodil’s Bootery as a shoe salesman’s for several years. He enjoyed bowling and being surrounded by his family.
In addition to his wife Clara, he is survived by his children, Michael Hughes and his wife Tammy of Carver, Laurie Gola and her husband Chris of Quincy, Linda Coughlin and her husband Bob and Scott Smith all of Rockland, his sister in law, Terry Keane of NH, his Brother in law, Ray Lane of Billerica; his grandchildren, Bobby and Keith Coughlin, Courtney Hughes all of Rockland, Samantha Hughes of Carver and Maddy Gola of Quincy; many nieces and nephews He was also the father of the late Robert J., Jr and John Hughes, brother of the late Eddie, Jackie, Billy Hughes and Mary Driscoll.
His services will be held on Thursday August 20th at 8:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 9:00AM in the Holy Family Church, Rockland, MA. Burial will be in the Holy Family Cemetery, Rockland. Relatives and friends are welcome to attend his visitation on Wednesday August 19th from 4:00-8:00PM.
