Obituary

Marie A. (Metta) (Lupica) Shumway, 97 years, of Brockton died Wednesday evening August 12, 2009 at St. Joseph Manor after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Harold Shumway. Marie was born and raised in Brockton, a daughter of the late Nicola and Maria (DeFelice) Metta. She remained a lifelong resident of Brockton and was a graduate of Brockton High School. She had been a nurse’s aide at the Lutheran Nursing Home (now the Guardian Center) for 10 years. Previously she worked at the Head Start program in Brockton.
Marie was very active in city politics and was a member of the Women’s Republican Club in Brockton and was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader. She was a long time and active communicant of St. Colman Church.
She enjoyed reading, jig saw puzzles and solving word search puzzles. Her biggest love was sitting at the beach listening to and watching the waves.

She is survived by two daughters Janice Raposa and her husband Charles of W. Bridgewater and Rosanne Kasper of Brockton, three grandchildren Christopher Raposa of Taunton, Michael Kasper of Lakeville and Lisa Braney of Sandwich and four great grandchildren. She was the sister of Josephine Jackson, Helen Cappiello and Fontaine Metta all of Brockton, Jennie Metta of Abington, Sabino Metta of FL and the late Lucy Cerro, her twin Michael, William and Frank Metta. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.

Funeral from the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Monday at 9am. Funeral Mass in Christ the King/St. Colman Parish at 10am. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visiting hours Sunday 3-7pm. Donations in memory of Marie may be made to The Patient Activities Fund at St. Joseph Manor, 215 Thatcher St., Brockton, MA 02302.
