GLOUCESTER: Christine Margaret (Burgess) Clarke, 93, of 1 Dexter Place, died early Tuesday morning, August 11, 2009 in the Seacoast Nursing & Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness. She was the wife of the late Thomas W. Clarke, Jr., who died in April of 2001. They had shared fifty-six years of marriage.
Born in Manchester on February 12, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Betsy (Chadwick) Burgess. She was a graduate of the Manchester High School class of 1934.
Mrs. Clarke was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Judith L. and Ronald E. White of Essex, two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard W., Sr. and Carolyn M. (Benjamin) Clarke of Essex and Paul D. Clarke of Gloucester, a sister, Dorothy Aldrich of Ossipee, NH, five grandchildren, Kelly, wife of John Shahdanian, Richard W., Jr., husband of Karen (Musto) Clarke, Kimberly A., wife of Andrew Dunsky, Jennifer N., wife of Bruce Richardson, Deanna C., wife of Scott Bodeau, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by four sisters, Eva Gillies, Edith Anderson, Shirley Nugent and Mary Lundberg and four brothers, Robert, Gordon, George and Walter Burgess.
Her funeral service will be held on Thursday afternoon in the St. John’s Episcopal Church, 48 Middle Street, Gloucester at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Interment will be held in the Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Assoc., 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
