WILMA (SMALL) HALLIDAY, a Hingham resident for 72 years, died on Saturday, August 1st, 2009 at her home at the age of 101. A graduate of Wheelock College in Boston, she taught at Derby Academy in Hingham. In 1931 she married Russell Halliday of Chicago and they moved to Evanston, Illinois. While there, she was active in staffing Junior League members as assistants at the Evanston Hospital. After she and her husband moved back east to Hingham, she was Chairman of the Junior Red Cross and a member of the Junior League of Boston. Mrs. Halliday managed the Red Cross swimming program at the Hingham Bathing Beach and also worked with teachers and school children making tray favors for various holidays that were distributed to Veterans' Hospitals in Boston and West Roxbury. Until recently, she was a volunteer at the Hingham Public Library. After being a member for many decades, she was honored to receive lifetime memberships to both the Cohasset Golf Club and the Hingham Yacht Club. She enjoyed being with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren along with her hobbies of gardening and playing bridge.
Wife of the late Russell Halliday, she leaves her son, Jack Halliday of Palo Alto, CA, and her daughter, Jill Sughrue of Centerville, MA. Also survived by her grandchildren; Lynda Ferguson of Scituate, Hank Halliday of San Diego, CA, Bill Sughrue of Newtown, CT, Ian Halliday of Palo Alto, Ca and Mark Sughrue of Brentwood, NH. She was also thrilled to have spent her 100th birthday with her eight great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be conducted on Tuesday, Aug. 11th at 1 PM at The Church of St. John the Evangelist, 172 Main St., Hingham, where she has been an active member for many years.
