TEWKSBURY - Lawrence J. Gunning, age 81, died Monday, Aug. 4, at his Tewksburyresidence following a 1 year battle with cancer. He was the husband of Sally-Lee (Walsh)Gunning, with whom he had celebrated a 30th wedding anniversary this past June 22nd.
He was born in Boston, March 11, 1922, a son of the late Robert J. and Margaret (St. George)Gunning. He was raised in East Boston, and had lived in North Andover, before moving toTewksbury in 1975.
During WWII, he served in the U.S.M.C., and served in the South Pacific. He was a 50 yearmember of the East Boston American Legion Post 30.
He retired from the Boston Fire Department in 1981, after 33 years of service. He was assignedto many stations, but the majority of his time was assigned to Engine Company 4 on CambridgeStreet in downtown. He was a member of the Boston Firefighters Association, Local 718.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son Keith Gunning of Maine, three sisters, RosemaryCrosier of Dalton, Loretta Cole of Wilmington, Barbara Salamone of Tewksbury, a brotherRobert Gunning of Calif., and 2 grandchildren.
He was also brother of the late Walter Gunning.
His Funeral Mass is Thursday, Aug. 7, at 10:00 a.m. in St. William’s Church, 1351 Main St. (Rte 38) Tewksbury. Visiting hours Wednesday 4 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment in Tewksbury Cemetery.
