Salem: Dorothy C. (Dawes) Smith age 69 of Salem, died Monday, August 3, 2009 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was the devoted wife of Ralph S. Smith, with whom she shared 50 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Lynn, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Linda (Steves) Dawes. In 1978 she and her family moved to Colorado and lived there until their return to Salem in 1985.
Dot was a full time mom. She was a loving, compassionate woman who was always eager to help the other person. She also volunteered with the Salvation Army. Dottie loved art and crocheting.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by 3 sons, Ralph S., Jr. and Mark Smith both of Canyon City, CO, Raymond S. Smith of Salem, 3 daughters, Sharon L. Smith and her companion Elizabeth Strait both of Salem, Diana Jones of Blyth, GA, Melinda Haight of Salem, 2 brothers, Donald Dawes of Lynn and Robert Dawes of Ohio. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Sean Smith of Colorado, Emily Smith of Newburyport, Joanne & Jason Smith both of Salem, Crystal, Matthew & Edward Jones of Georgia, Ashley Haight of Salem, and Christopher Haight of Danvers. She also has several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son and daughter Ronald and Barbara Smith.
Relatives and friends are invited to her visiting hours on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Levesque Funeral Home, 163 Lafayette St. [Rt. 114 / 1-A] Salem. Her funeral service will follow at 8 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 93 North St., Salem, MA 01970.
