On August 1, 2009, Tammy Lynn Horta-Duarte, 38, of Westport, ended her ten year courageous battle with cancer surrounded by her loving family. Tammy was a loving wife to Carlos Duarte, mother to Kyle and Jared, daughter, sister and granddaughter. Her gentle smile and kind ways made her the very special person that she was. Her children will always remember her as being the best mom God could have given them.
Tammy grew up in New Bedford and attended Bishop Stang High School. She later received her Associates degree from Bristol Community College in Pastry Arts. Tammy was a dedicated and loving homemaker. She lived for her children and family and brought happiness wherever she went with her loving eyes and sweet smile. Tammy was a talented pastry chef and the cakes that she decorated won local awards. Tammy enjoyed spending time with her family, going on vacations and enjoyed listening to the Beatles. Tammy was a member of ICES- International Cake Exploration Society. She was a communicant of Saint Julie Billiart Parish and volunteered at her children’s school.
Tammy is also survived by her parents, Thomas and Fatima Horta of Dartmouth, her brother Bob Horta of New Bedford, her brother and sister-in-law Chris and Michelle Horta of Westport, her grandmother Alice de Oliviera of Dartmouth, her mother and father-in-law Virgilio and Lourdes Duarte of Portugal, her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Joe and Maria Lourdes Pine of New Bedford, her brother-in-law Roy Duarte of New Bedford, her godmother Marilia Pires of Faial, Azores, nephews and niece Justin and Phillip Pine and Cameron and Avery Horta; cousins and many loving friends and family. She was the granddaughter of the late Eduino de Oliveira and Jaime and Irene Horta. She was also the sister-in-law of the late Maggie Duarte. Tammy will be greatly missed by all and her loss is a tremendous void in the lives of her family.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 AM at St. Julie Billiart Church. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday from 4-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
